Those Are The Badlands, We Don’t Go There

I love how I started New Music Tuesdays and then never did it again. In my defense, moving is stressful, complicated, and all around soul sucking. I’m all moved in now though, currently settled and watching “The Prince & Me” on our couch.

Right before I moved I purchased Halsey’s debut album “Badlands” after falling in love with her ep and the album on spotify. I went to Target especially because that is where she released the deluxe edition with five bonus tracks.

I have so many favorites, basically the whole album, it’s hard to pick just one song. This is an album that you can listen to from start to finish without skipping any songs, almost a rare quality nowadays.

The opening song Castle starts your adventure into the Badlands. A notable line is, “I’m headed straight for the castle, they wanna make me their queen. There’s an old man sitting on the throne that’s saying that I probably shouldn’t be so mean.” Halsey is clearly on her way to being at the top of the Billboard charts, as well as the queen of alt rock.

The next track, the one song that really made me love Halsey and her music, is called Hold Me Down. This song, and this album, really talks about people trying to keep her from the top. The lines, along with the head bobbing beats, say to us “I sold my soul to a three piece, and he told me I was holy, he’s got me down on both knees, but it’s the devil that’s tryna hold me down.”

The song Colors, is one that I will forever love. Halsey is a lyrical genius with this one. “You’re drippin’ like a saturated sunrise, you’re spilling like an overflowing sink. You’re ripped at every edge but you’re a masterpiece, and now I’m tearing through the pages and the ink.” You can tell this is about someone she loved very much, someone troubled, but she saw the beauty in them anyways.

This album is going to go very far, as is Halsey. This is just the beginning for her, and I honestly can’t wait to see how far she will go.
